Can I Really Improve My Thinking Skills Through a Report?

The launch of the Watson-Glaser II marked a significant step for Pearson TalentLens. With more business-specific content and three new reports, it’s our most complete assessment solution. Here’s a brief overview of the Development Report (our first report for trainers & coaches).

The Watson-Glaser II Development Report provides insight and specific guidance to strengthen an individual’s critical thinking knowledge and skills. The report’s text is directed at the individual (e.g., “You scored higher than most of your peers.”), but managers, coaches, and other development professionals can use it in a coaching intervention. The report can also be used as part of a broader development process that includes classroom training, e-learning, and self-study.

Critical thinking is a cognitive skill, so certain elements that facilitate effective critical thinking (e.g., working memory, reading ability) won’t change through a simple intervention. But research clearly shows that critical thinking can be improved when development efforts focus on improving knowledge and behavioral skills (Halpern). The report includes a number of features that facilitate skill building:

  • The report begins with an applied example and a framework (the RED Model) to build an understanding of the components of critical thinking that are assessed:  Recognizing Assumptions, Evaluating Arguments, and Drawing Conclusions.
  • The individual then sees their subscale results including interpretations of how his or her scores would translate into actual job behavior.
  • To help individuals build their critical thinking skills, the report offers customized development suggestions based on the individual’s subscale scores. Structured space is also provided to reflect on the most useful development suggestions and how to leverage these.
  • The report ends by offering guidance on creating a development plan for building critical thinking skills.

In total, the Watson-Glaser II Development Report offers individuals key insights, suggestions, and structured guidance to promote the growth of their critical thinking knowledge and skills.
